About Psoriasis Psoriasis is a common immune-mediated chronic skin disease. Psoriasis causes T-cell activation in which CD4 (helper) and CD8 (suppressor/cytotoxic) cells stimulate the hyper proliferation of skin cells and the lesions seen in patients. It can involve many areas of the body like the knees, elbows, scalp, feet and lower back and may range from a few spots on the body to large areas.
What does Psoriasis look like? Psoriasis appears as patches of raised red skin, covered by a flaky white buildup. It may appear as a pimple-ish (pustular Psoriasis) or burned (erythrodemic) appearance and can cause intense itching and burning.
How is Psoriasis categorized? Psoriasis is categorized as mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the percentage of body surface involved. -Palm of one hand equals 1% -Less than 2% of the body is mild -3 and 10% is considered moderate -More than 10% is severe
Who gets Psoriasis? Psoriasis is a genetic disease; usually a family member has had it in one out of three cases. It often appears between the ages of 15 and 35, but can develop at any age. About 10-15% of patients develop it before age 10, and it may also appear in infancy. Psoriasis affects more than 4.5 million U.S. adults; approximately 1.5 million have moderate-to-severe Psoriasis. There are 150,000 to 260,000 new cases diagnosed annually.
How is Psoriasis treated? Treatment of Psoriasis is determined by location, severity, and history of the condition. The objective of treatment is to slow down more rapid than usual growth rate of skin cells. Patients are usually treated by a Dermatologist.
